Ulrike Bernard & Amelie Marei Loellmann
Polyphrenic Creatures is an interdisciplinary collective founded by the artists* Ulrike Bernard and Amelie Marei Loellmann. In their work they approach different formats of creating narrative spaces by laying voice and sound carpets into side specific locations. Since 2014 they have been devoting themselves to the utopian and fantastic under the guise of reality in dialogical encounters, Live Audio Dramas and audio walks, in which they treat listening and imagining as dynamic forms of action. They thereby clothe things, states, and situations in words, interweaving them through plural narrative styles into acoustic fabrics. Polyphrenic Creatures lay out these speech and sound carpets, creating singing and speaking imagination fields in site-specific locations. Since 2018 they moved forward a practice of developing those carpets in collective processes, to dissolve the hierarchy in between audience and performer, speaker and listener. That’s how the starting and the center point of their work became the dialogue. Their works invite us to engage in new directions of reading in order to release internalized ways of thinking and acting from their rigidity and to learn from each other and to (re-) learn forms of interaction.
Their last work N E P O < is a performative gesture of opening through their bodies and voices with local-situated questions and communal knowledge production. Currently, a collaboration with the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung in Hohenlockstedt is taking place for the storytelling-café series Holo Miteinander and the upcoming multi-voiced, interdisciplinary event of Caring Infrastructures. The side specific dialogue encounter Pop Intratausch invites one to collective processes through an active practice of listening and conversation.
They create Live Audio Dramas about humans that put aside their work to turn metaphysically into plants (Creatures in the Mind Nets). They explain the reconstruction of the human mind in the shape of a sponge-like multi-headed creature, by which artificial and organic matter become one, creating a new edifice of ideas (Softsonic GG). The work Spendatime, could be seen as a prelude to un-clock our clocked time structures. In their performance environments, lights and sound sources become personified, gaining voices of their own. In outdoor spaces, they devise audio walks to conceptually relocate the given environment, whether through walking or pausing(Krebsgang).
